  1. Before I read this book I didnt really know what a commando was, I just knew it was something dealing with the military or something. A commando is small fighting force specially trained for making quick destructive raids against enemy-held areas.

  2. Hasidic Jews

I never really knew what Hasidic Jews were. I thought that every male with a beard that long beard who dressed like them and talk like them are just Jewish people and that’s just how they all dressed and acted. Little did I know that they are actually very religious people who obey over 600 rules of God. I don’t really understand how their prayers go because I certainly don’t know what they are saying and what prayers do they actually say. I have yet a matter of time to read more about them. Hasidic Jews sound so boring to read about, but I was taught that you can learn so much from anything. It just takes interest and dedication.

Hasidic Judaism (also called Chasidic Judaism or Hasidism) refers to an orthodox Jewish mysticism that focuses on the engagement of God through mystical experience. The modern Hasidic movement was founded by Israel ben Eliezer (commonly known as Baal Shem Tov) in the 18th century C.E. in Eastern Europe. Unlike other forms of Judaism, Hasdism focuses on personal experiences of God instead of ritual and religious education. They believe God can be encountered in the everyday activities of life and not just in study or worship. Hasidic Judaism is centered around holy men (called zadikim or rebbes) who are believed to have direct, personal connection to God.

In How to Ruin a Summer Vacation, Amy encounters a Hasidic Jew. She talks briefly about Hasidism. Hasidism is a movement in Judaism. They believe that God’s presence is found everywhere, and they should serve God with their own actions and words. Her description about them is practically accurate but also stereotypical–curly sideburns, long coats and black hats. Most of them look present themselves like said, but not all. They have about 613 commandments, which they either follow or abstain from. There are 365 acts that should be followed and 248 negative commandments that should be avoided.

  4. Hasidic Jews

The Hasidim, or "pious ones" in Hebrew, belong to a special movement within Orthodox Judaism, a movement that, at its height in the first half of the nineteenth century, claimed the allegiance of millions in Eastern and Central Europe--perhaps a majority of East European Jews. Soon after its founding in the mid-eighteenth century by Jewish mystics, Hasidism rapidly gained popularity in all strata of society, especially among the less educated common people, who were drawn to its charismatic leaders and the emotional and spiritual appeal of their message, which stressed joy, faith, and ecstatic prayer, accompanied by song and dance. Like other religious revitalization movements, Hasidism was at once a call to spiritual renewal and a protest against the prevailing religious establishment and culture.

  5. Well I guess I'll go and write something about what I know so far in the book about Amy .
Amy is the main character in a book called " How to ruin a summer vacation " . She is a typical 16 year old american girl who also happens to be half israeli . Her father was the israeli half while her mother was the american half . Her life is somewhat of the growing up without a father thing . Her parents hit it off and what would you know months later Amy . She's a girl who used to look up to her father as a child for whenever he visited and took her out on birthdays but as she got old she realizes what kind of man he is . The type who ran away and didn't try to work things out with her mother , now she totally resents the man . But one summer her mother gets a phone call from Ron ( Amy's dad ) asking her to follow him to Israel to visit her grandmother who she didn't know existed till that moment . So as any teenager who hates their parent , she denied and hung up . But after some conversations with Amy's mother ,Ron finally convinces her to let Amy go and spend the summer with him to go visit her grandmother in Israel .

but it would be a good thing for her to go.because look at what she get to do.she get to around the world for free.she not the one paying.even if she never met the grandma she should be happy she get to met the lady that gave her dad life.because with out her.she would not be here.and she get to see a lot of new things around the world.

  7. Tel Aviv

Tel Aviv is the second largest city in Israel (after Jerusalem), and the largest metropolitan area. Tel Aviv (meaning literally "Hill of Spring") itself was founded in 1909 by a group of distinguished Jewish residents of Jaffa. They envisaged a European-style garden suburb, with wide streets and boulevards. It's the city that many Israelis think of as their New York. While the comparison was once a stretch, and indeed Tel Aviv is still a fraction of New York's size.It grew mainly from the south to the north so the further you go to the north you will encounter newer buildings and wealthier communities.

  8. Golan Heights is a beautiful mountainous region in northern Israel. When people stay in Israel, they find themselves having to visit Golan Heights. It is known as the Israeli Texas, for the whole area is big. Historic and archeological sites catch the visitors' attention. As you go higher on the hills of Golan Heights, the view gets even better. During the night, it gets extremely cold.

  9. Moshav & Kibbutz

Moshav is a type of Israeli town or settlement, in particular a type of cooperative agricultural community of individual farms pioneered by the Labour Zionists during the second aliyah. A resident or a member of a moshav can be called a "moshavnik".

The moshavim are similar to kibbutzim with an emphasis on community labor. They were designed as part of the Zionist state-building program following the Yishuv (settlement) in the British Mandate of Palestine during the 20th century, but contrary to the collective kibbutzim, farms in a moshav tended to be individually owned but of fixed and equal size.

  12. The El Al Israel Airlines is the most important airline in Israel, risking lives. This airline can hold about 3 million people per flight. I've read some customer reviews online and most were positives statements. The food that they serve is delicious. The service is always great, and the flight attendants are always there and courteous. Checking in is fast and easy. The only downfall the El Al Israel Airline really have is that boarding the plane and finding seats isn't always smooth. El Al Israel Airlines is great, and you are always entertained.

  13. El Al Airlines
When I was reading the book, I thought that El Al Airlines wasn’t even real or didn’t exist. In the book, it talks about how the plane has a personal TV embedded on the back seat of each chair. It also says that on each flight they have air marshals.
Well the airline usually travels to Israel. It has a personal TV on every seat. It always has air marshals because it has always been threatened for hijacking. Although this is true, only one El Al flight has been successfully hijacked and this happened many, many years ago. It is said that the EL AL airlines may be the safest airline. A well-trained agent interviews every passenger before boarding the plane.

  14. Tel Aviv

Tel Aviv also known as Tel Aviv-Yafo is the second popular city in Israel. The Jewish Community of founded Tel Aviv in 1909 on the outskirts of the ancient port city. Tel Aviv is also known as the “City that never sleeps”. Tel Aviv is a popular international tourist destination. It is also renowned for its 24-hour culture, beaches, bars, restaurant’s, cafes, parks, shopping, and cosmopolitan lifestyle. Tel Aviv is an economic hub, home to the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange, corporate offices and Research and Development centers. Tel Aviv has been named the third "hottest city for 2011" (behind only New York City and Tangier). I don’t really don’t know why Amy thinks Tel Aviz is a War-Zone. Have you seen the pictures of this place? It looks like the states or some other place.

  16. I would like to talk about Amy. Amy seems like a girl that over thinks too much things. She thinks the family don't like her because of the looks they give her, they probably give her those looks because shes new to the family and they don't know each other. The cousin should understand that she wasnt doing anything with the boyfriend. The boyfriend of the cousin was saving her from a dog, and nothing else .

    ReplyDelete
  17. I liked the part when Amy met her cousin O'Snot. It showed that her cousin wasn't very pleased to meet her. It even got worst when Amy started laughing after hearing her name. I guess O'Snot doesn't really like Amy because they are both teenagers. After O'Snot sees her boyfriend's hands on Amy, now she must really hate her. Although it was an accident, Amy's family doesn't think so.

  18. So far what I have read is mainly introducing the main characters, Amy and her father Ron. Amy didn't have her father around while she was growing up. All of a sudden out of nowhere he calls to let her know that her grandmother is ill. She freaks out because he only calls on her birthday. Then next thing you know, she is going to Israel with her father instead of going to tennis camp. She is in for a surprise to getting to know her father.

  21. I love how Amy described one of the guys she met as a cute jerk. When Amy met her cousin, O'Snot, for the first time, right off the bat, you could tell that O'Snot didn't really like Amy. It's almost as if she looks down on Amy. It could be understandable, that she feels that way, but it's always nice to give somebody a chance. However, I thought it was a little too much when Amy ran away from her grandma after just meeting her. I know it was probably overwhelming for Amy, but she really didn't have to run out.
I feel like throughout this whole journey Amy has been in, she could use somebody she knows well by her side, like her best friend. But I'm looking forward to reading on a little more to find out what happens next.

  22. Chapters 10 and 11 were pretty interesting. I think it tells a lot about Amy as a person. She has a bitchy, mean, spoiled exterior which is obvious from all the rude remarks she makes and attitude she gives. However, she has a sweet and caring heart. I say this because as much as she dislikes Ron she didn't tell her Safta about how their relationship back in America is because she didn't want to upset her. She was also willing to play with Matan and and the dog which showed a different side than her normal one.
Her relationship with Avi also becomes a bit more complicated in these chapters. She is determined to hate him, but still retains a interest in him whether she wants to admit it or not. He also treats her in an unfriendly manner, but then helps wash her feet and says she was "beautiful and natural." I think that they will continue to develop their own strange relationship throughout the book.

  23. In chapters 1-5 it was pretty funny. amy explains how her and her dads relationship is. Amy calls her dad sperm donor which means to me that he just gave his sperm to the mother wich had a baby and didn'nt really took care of her. It was sad that amys real dad just sees here onlyt during amys birthday.Ron (sperm donor)just breaks the news to amy that her grandmother is very ill and that she would go with her father at israel to see her.She has to spend time with her real dad during her summer vacation witch she has alot of plans.

To me i think amy is a brat like material wise. Her vavorite hobby is mostly shopping. shes very funny how she describes how she looks like on the book. where she wanted to change er appearance. I don't know how she looks like but i'll mpicture her as kim kardashian.

it's also funny when she was at the plane and looks at everyone like there some kind of terrorist. i don't wanna be messed up but i feel the same way about her. i wouldn't want to be next to them on a plane there might be a bomb! once they reached there destination at airport ben gurion airport. amy was very thirsty and she sees this coke machine which leads for you to have your passport(which to me ws dumb). but new country new rules. she waited in the line for so long just to know she can't buy until she has her passport.

on the last chapter there were almost at there destination . which she decribes as it was very nice and looked like it was from a picture. there were going up the mountains and stop. ron talks to amy to let her know that they don't know about her. amy felt like she was stabbed in the heart. but all in all she met the whole family which had very funny english meaning names.

    ReplyDelete
  24. ON chapters 6-10 amy finally meets the whole family and what she was therefore. amy finally meets her grandmother who was very ill. she was very white with blue eyes. it's sad . then she meets this guy with no shirt and thinks it's her cousins o'snots boyfriend.

she mostly talks to her grandmother and bond. they mostly talk about there life and what they love doing. the grandmother ask about amys mom and deribe her amys say's shes very pretty and has a job that pays her alot of money.then safta ask her to tell about her self amy say
s that she does ok in school and her bestfriend is jewish. that she like to play tennis, ski and shop.the grandmother trells her that shes very energetic and she would want to know more about her.

on the next chapter she she tells that her relationship with osnat is going bad. amy thinks that osnat hates her. amy complains that she has to room with her. after amy showers she wears this shorts with BITCH leters on her butt. then spermdonor ask her wat's going on and she doesn't know wat to say.
