Katniss had several visitors at the Justice Building prior to leaving District 12 for Hunger Games. One of them is her mother.
Do you think what she says to her mother is fair? Why or why not?
We would like to welcome the Saipan Southern High School Book Club. We are excited to hear your thoughts and join our discussions. We are excited with our library collaboration!
I don't think that what Katniss said to her mother is fair. The reason why is because I think her mother abandoned them or stop taking care of them is because she was still grieving for the lost of her husband. I think Katniss should have been nicer to her. It might be the last time Katniss gets to see her mother, so she should have not shouted at her. Katniss should have just told her mom that she loves her and to make sure she takes care of Prim.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you. Katniss could just have told her mother that she loves her and her sister instead of parting ways in that mood. I don't like leaving with a heavy heart specially in Katniss's situation she is unsure whether she'll see them again.
DeleteI think it is fair what Katniss said to her mother . Because the mom just greets them , then gives them instructions what to do, to get by in life. The mother left her family ever since the father died and Katniss had to do everything for her family. Katniss shouted at the mother because she had to take all the responsibilities especially taking care of the little sister. So I agree why she shouted at the mother
ReplyDeleteI think it's fair what Katniss said to her mother.Katniss was abandoned by her mother so Katniss has the reason to tell her mother to take care of her little sister. After her father died, her mother stopped taking care of them so Katniss had to take all the responsibilities.I think its fair how Katniss reacted to her mother.Katniss's response is reasonable.
ReplyDeleteI think it is completely fair. Katniss is worried about her sister and she has to put her well being first, even if it means being harsh to their mother. She had to make her understand that she can't do what she did the first time again.
ReplyDeleteWhat Katniss did wasn't fair at all. Just because her mother mistreated Prim and her does not give her any authority to disrespect her that way. Yes, her mother may have abandoned them after the passing of her husband, but that still doesn't mean that she no longer cared for them. She may have not showed it, but people have their own way of coping for things and trying to live their life normally.
ReplyDeleteWhat Katniss did and said to her mother was fair. Because it is a mothers responsibility to take care of her children. Even though her husband passed away, doesn't mean she should abandon whats hers. She should still be able to take care of them.
ReplyDeleteI think it was fair. Because she so messed up that she couldn't watch her kid. But in another way its not fair because she still in her shock mode. But to me this question was fair and not fair because she should her kids when then need help cause she still to young to learn the things.
ReplyDeleteWhat Katniss had said to her mother was fair. No one could really blame her for being so hard on her mother. After her father had died from the accident, her mother was so heartbroken that she forgot all about her children. She pretty much left them for dead. If it wasn't for Katniss, her and her sister would have died of starvation. Katniss was forced to become the adult. She was forced to take care of her family on her own. She had all the rights to yell and express what she has been holding in for the last five years. And even if her mother uses the excuse of coping and whatnot, what kind of mother is she if she falls apart so easily?? So for me, Katniss was right to yell.
ReplyDeleteI think what Katniss said to her mother was definitely fair. Being a mother is a full time job. You always have to put your children's welfare before yours, no matter what the circumstance. Katniss' mother should have handled the death of her husband in a more mature manner, rather than abandoning her kids at such a crucial time in their lives. Katniss has all the right to raise her voice at her mother, in fear that she will react to Katniss' departure the same way she reacted to her husband's. She must make sure Prim's health and safety comes first.

ReplyDeleteWhat Katniss said to her mother was fair. She left her and Prim when they were younger. What kind of real mother abandons their kids? I understand that times were tough for her, but it gives you no reason whatsoever to leave your kids when they should've been your number one priority from the start. Katniss definitely had a right to shout at her mother, telling her that she can't leave again and to take care of Prim. She's probably more of an adult than her own mother. I know Katniss loves and respects her mom with all she's got, but she just had to let it out at some point.
ReplyDeleteI believe what katniss said to her mother was fair, because she didn't do anything after her husband died.Katniss had to be the head of the family and do everything from buying groceries and cooking for prim. Its not fair that she didn't do anything at that time. If i was her i would just move on give thanks to the husband by having 2 wonderful girls to take care of. I know its hard to loose someone you love so much, but you also got to love the people they left behind(katniss, prim).
ReplyDeleteI would agree yet disagree at the same time.I disagree because Katniss had no right to shout at her mother. I find it disrespectful that she did that. I mean, it was only natural for her mother to be depressed at the death of her husband. Everybody would go through the same process if they had lost someone they really loved.I also agree because although she is depressed, Katniss's mother should have really stepped up her game as a mother and acted like an adult about the matter.Neglecting your kids because of a diseased love one is no excuse to abandon your role as a parent. Katniss's dad would have wanted her mom to take care of the kids like when he was still alive.
ReplyDeleteI think its totally fair what Katniss said to her mother. Theres no other way to put it. The truth hurts and Katniss really cares about Prim so she has to make sure her mother understands that. She cant neglect Prim while Katniss is gone because ultimately Prim would end up dying of starvation. Plus, food in their district is scarce so it would be hard for Prim to go out and hunt game for her and her mother. Shes still too young.
ReplyDeleteI Think what katniss said to her mother was completely fair! What her mother did to them was horrible.Yes I understand that her husband had died, but that's no excuse to neglect her children.I mean they almost died of starvation. She was only trying to make it clear to her mother that she can not let it happen again.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was fair, she needs to make her mother see that she Katniss is leaving and that her mother needs to take responsibilty as a mother.
ReplyDeleteshe need to be much nicer to her mother.her mother has alot of problems herself.she lost the husband.look who he died who would not be super hurt and heart broken.she need to noe that with out her mm and dad she would not be there.the mother lost the man she really loves and will never forget him.but at the same time her mom needs to cheer up it kinda part of life.cuz god picks you wen your ready
ReplyDeleteI think what she said to her mother is fair .Katniss was abandoned by her mother. when her dad died, her mother stopped taking care of them. Katniss had to take her mom's responsibilities. She had to take care of her mom and little sister and get food for them to eat.
ReplyDeleteWhat she did to her mother was fair and not fair. Its fair because the mother is not doing what she needs to do has a mother. shes not taking care of her kids. Thats probably why katniss yelled at her like that. And again it was to harsh to get yelled at by your kid. Katniss should of been much more gentle. The mom was put into shocked when her husband died in the mine.
ReplyDeleteShe didnt no what to do.
Yes i think its fair what she said to her mother because her mom
ReplyDeleteis weak. So Katniss needed to say those words to her mother to get
her strong. So that if Katniss couldn't make it through the hunger
games the mom can be strong and not be depressed. She may be sad
but it will get her strong. That's why i think its fair.
I feel that what Katniss said to her mother was fair. I personally know what she went through, not exactly but somewhat similar to her situation. A parent leaving their child could possibly traumatize them, or at least leave some sort of dent in their life. So I think I understand how Katniss feels, and i would've probably done the same.
ReplyDeleteMorally it wasn't, but her intentions meant something deeper. She wanted to let her mother know that "HEY MOM! IMMA GO AND DIE! MAKE SURE YOU WATCH PRIM OKAY?!" especially in the state that she is in, she needs to addressed that she can't be the way she is if Katniss does die.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it was fair. Yes, it was wrong for her to leave her kids but she was going through a tough time in her life. Losing a loved one is very heart breaking, but Katniss should have at least reassured her that everything would be fine and said their I love you's and good byes. Whatever Katniss feels is understandable.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't say it was fair, but I'd say that it was the right thing to do. I'm not sure if Katniss could've found a different way of saying what she wanted to say, but I don't think she meant any disrespect towards her mom. She just wanted to make sure that her mom would be able to take care of Prim (and herself) while she was gone. Someone Katniss' age shouldn't have to bear the responsibilities of a parent, so her mom should start acting like one again instead of continuously mourning. She may have lost her husband, but so did her kids.
ReplyDeleteWell I think it's both fair and unfair . Because the mom is still pretty much broken emotionally and physically . She's most likely still grieving the lost of her husband who she pretty much sacrificed everything for . I also believe that she is unfair because she is not fulfilling her duty as a mother . It would be understandable if she didn't have children but she's got to get it in her head she has two , one who can pretty much take care of herself and the other is still young and can't really go thing's on her own just yet .
