Projects!!!!

Hello readers! Now is the time to share about your book in different media. This is where it counts a lot because this is your 2nd quarter project and it is something that will help promote the book that you just read. Choose from one of the options. Make sure to write the following.
Name, period, title and author of your book, your project choice.

Here are your choices for your project:

1.   From your novel, choose a chapter and convert it to a radio drama. Recorded version of the story--or scene from it--as a radio play. Include an announcer and sound effects.

2. Make a talking display of a book. Tape a dialogue or description about an event, scene, or character.

3. Do a dramatic reading (Reader's Theater) of a scene. Select the scene and ask friends to help read it dramatically.

4. Read a scene with special effects. Choose a particularly interesting passage and read it with a musical background or sound effects.

5. From your novel, choose a chapter and convert the chapter into a puppet show. Make simple puppets (stick puppets, finger puppets, paper bag puppets, and so on), and present the story or an exciting scene from it. Also applicable to shadow puppetry.

6. Prepare a television commercial about a book. Imagine a book is the basis for a mini-series on television. Prepare and give the television commercials that would make people watch for it. Commercial should not be less than 30 seconds but no more than 3 minutes.

Have fun!

Posting #7

Please post  what you feel about a particular event on your readings on pages 76- 90. I would expect you to talk about a significant event in your readings and you could either tell me how it makes you feel... perhaps angry, upset, happy or mad and support your feelings but giving personal examples.

Posting #6

Post your readings on pages 61-75 here. I'd like to hear more about How You Feel about the events in the book rather than just hearing about the summary of the book. Dig deep guys but make sure to use appropriate words to express what you truly feel about the book so far. Give examples so I'll know what you are referring to. Blog away!

It's getting really exciting! Someone is reading Dead Was So Last Year. Would you have walked into an interview and start cleaning the place. What if your boss is invisible? I guess it really shows the real prospect employee would do even if the boss is not watching.

How about the book that Michael is reading, The Girl Death Left Behind. Talk about depression! What would you do if stayed behind when the rest of the family went on a picnic then later you find out that they all died of a car accident and you are the only living family member? Would you know how to deal with what life is handing you?

How about getting framed for killing your dad? Rachelle is reading Wanted. Imagine being in your dad's car listening to a news about your dad's death and you are the suspect. Would you have driven off and runaway or face what is ahead? What if your mom does not believe you or even the police?

Lots of things to talk about. Well,  Shark readers, continue to tell me more about what's going on in your novels. Make sure to include the title and author of your book. Happy Thanksgiving!

It's so cool to read about the catchy beginnings of your books. A book opens with a gangster beating up one of their rival gang leader. Another book starts with a girl getting electrocuted with an Espresso machine while on a tub and gains super-power to see the future. Someone reads a the beginning of his book about a child with Asperger's? What is Asperger's? Another beginning of a book is telling about a drug trade that has gone bad. Wow! It's exciting beginnings. It's great to read them all and I look forward to reading your books through your perspective. Happy reading!

The Beginning

It's great to hear what you are reading this month! I'm excited to read your journeys with your books. I'm sure that you will meet interesting characters, fun events and even many twist and turns on the plot. Tell me what you have read so far.

Banned Books Week

It was a great Banned Books Week Celebration here at Simon Sanchez High School. We had the poster contest, road-side wave and Read-Out events. We received colorful and catchy poster designs by our talented students. Thanks to Mr. Canos for promoting the contest to his Art students! The road-side wave also was great. Despite the rains, the students' spirit was still up to promote our Freedom to Read. Many motorist noticed our signs and even supported our wave by sounding their horns or waving back. It was a great community awareness. We even attracted the media while doing the wave. All 63 students stayed safe the whole time. Thanks to Ms. Vivian Pangelinan, Ms. Aguilar, Mrs. Camat,Mr. Escalona the Close-Up Club and the National Honors Society. The Read-Out event from Monday thru Friday was also packed with a lot of guest readers from our leaders, teachers, students and the community. We had Superintendent Jon Fernandez open the event with the reading of the Black Boy. We also had Eloise Sanchez and John Sanchez read enthusiastically to our students. The students were engaged to the readers as they shared their personal reasons of their selections. We also had Congresswoman Madeleine Bordallo on Wednesday and Governor Calvo on Friday. Governor Eddie Baza Calvo did his weekly address in the school library. This is the first time that the governor's weekly address was done outside his office. He had the Banned Books Week as his background and our SSHS as his live audience. It was a treat for our students to see the whole process how the Governor does his address. He commended our aggressive efforts on promoting our Freedom of speech and freedom of expression. Simon Sanchez High School Library would like to thank the Krug Foundation for the grant, Intellectual Freedom Office for all the promotional items for the celebration, our school administrators, especially Mrs. Beth Perez, for working diligently on the Read-Out events, our teachers for promoting the program to their students and our student volunteers - who welcomed our speakers, set-up the snack tables for our speakers and set-up our Read-Out stage. For those I forgot to mention, thank you for making our first Banned Books celebration memorable.

Leave your message to Simon Sanchez High School Library

The school year is closing and there's so much things that needs to be done. There's the rush to finish all the cataloging, complete the inventory, write the library report and most importantly, part ways with my students. I think the hardest part of all the task is parting ways with my the Library Aides. You might recall me mentioning that this is my first year in this school library. It has been a very "blessed" year for me working alongside with you. It was a battle to encourage you to read Fahrenheit 451. Most of you didn't like the idea of a Dystopian society with no libraries, no books. Reading The Hunger Games was quite exciting because of the movie-tie in but you were quick to make a distinction between the book and the movie. You all have mentioned that reading the book was a better experience. I was hesitant to let you read How to Ruin My Summer Vacation but I was really surprised that I couldn't stop a lot of you from talking about the "juicy" scenes of the book (not that it's x-rated but was outrageously funny) references of what regular teens care about. I am the winner in all of the reading experiences that you had whether you disagreed in some of the ideas or enjoyed the pleasure of reading something fun. You gave me the motivation to seek for more support to let more students read interesting books. As you leave Simon Sanchez High School, remember the fun experiences you had with you friends including your teachers. Visit the library anytime, we are now a digital library (open 24/7). Drop a note when you can. I'm sure our future readers would love to hear what you have to say. To all my senior students, congratulations!

How to Ruin My Summer - The Final Discussion

Hello Shark readers! By now, you should be finished reading the book or if not you should already be close to the end. I'd like to ask you to post you favorite part of the book. Try not to mention the same sections of the book. You could focus on the event, on a character or both. After that, you could share who you would like to tell this book about or who you would encourage to read this book and why. Lets help your SSHS Library get more students reading the book. Happy blogging!

How to Ruin My Summer Vacation

Okay, okay. The book is not as bad as the title. I think you'd figure it by now. You might even have a better understanding of Amy's attitude and a knowledge of what it's like to stay in a "kibbutz" and to deal with a sick "safta." I'd like to hear what you think so far about the book. You should be halfway finish by now. Tell me about what you think about Amy, her family and her friends in Israel and how it relates to you. Happy reading!

Simon Sanchez High Library Catalog is now available online!

In our efforts to provide better access of the library resources for our
students, we are working hard to making them available 24/7 from any of
their web-access capable devices. We are proud to announce that SSHS
Library is the first public school library to have our library catalogs
available for browsing online. Teachers, students and parents could now
check online about SSHS library holdings. You could find out the
availability of the books or other resources before even coming to the
library. You could also search our OPAC to find out about our over 8000
e-books that could be accessible when you see Mrs. Napalan to sync your
device.

Here's more information about OPAC and how they could be accessible. I
would like to ask if the link could be embedded to our school's website. It
will be great for our online guest and our community to see that we have
this available for our students.

OPAC is a library term that stands for Online Patron Access Catalog. The
term is popular to describe a program which allows library users or library
'patrons' to search a library.

LibraryWorld has several different ways a patron can search a library. The
most popular is through the LibraryWorld OPAC service. There are three ways
to access the service:

1. You can click on this link and go directly to the OPAC service and
your library - Go to
OPAC.

2. You or a patron can type http://opac.libraryworld.com into the
Toolbar area of a Web browser. This will bring up the OPAC login page.
Type: Simon Sanchez High Library

Students could type in the title of the book, the author's name of even the subject or topic they are interested of. After the records show, you could click on the title of the particular item you are searching to find out the status of the book. This will tell you whether the book is in or checked out or if it's an e-book.

Be looking out for the new titles being added on our catalog. We will also soon add the Follett Shelf. Follett Shelf are e-books that will allow you to access the resources immediately online. Read the books from any of your devices.

More to see in our SSHS Library soon!

Beating the Careers - Discussion Post #8

The Careers had a great strategy in winning the game but there are others who are working alone or in separate teams to beat them. Which of your opponents will you eliminate first and how will you do it?

Picking your teammates - Discussion #7

As you read the Hunger Games, you learn that some participants choose to join a team or go solo. If you were one of the players, would you team-up with someone or would you choose to go by yourself? If you plan to join a team, who would you choose? If you plan to go solo, what is your plan of survival? Explain how you will hunt, sleep, or eat without any help or if you have other people in your team, how will you divide the duties?

Training Day - Discussion #6

Katniss and Peeta used their skills and talents to show their abilities to survive for the upcoming Hunger Games. Katniss even thought she will score really low for her stunt but something unexpected happened. If you were chosen to be one of the players of the Hunger Games, how will you convince the Gamekeepers to give you a high score. What particular talent will you use and how will you use it? (Make sure that your talent and act will be original).

Katniss and the Avox - Discussion #5

Katniss met the Avox girl and remembers the past encounter with her in the forest before the Hunger Games. The Avox is one of the servants in her quarter. Katniss sees her everyday and somehow feels "guilty" about the whole thing. Have you ever been in a predicament like Katniss? How will you deal with the Avox if you were in her situation?

Hunger Games - Discussion Question #3

What do you think the dandelion stand for for Katniss? What item would remind you of something similar to Katniss's dandelion?

Monday, February 6, 2012

Discussion Question #2

Katniss had several visitors at the Justice Building prior to leaving District 12 for Hunger Games. One of them is her mother.

Do you think what she says to her mother is fair? Why or why not?

We would like to welcome the Saipan Southern High School Book Club. We are excited to hear your thoughts and join our discussions. We are excited with our library collaboration!

Hunger Games - Discussion Question 1

It's exciting to open a new book and ride the adventure of reading.

The beginning of the book is quite emotional but it propels the whole story to a new heights.

We'd like to hear what you think about the big event in the beginning of the book.
If you were in Katniss's situation, will you take the place of your sister in the Hunger Games? Why?

Hunger Games

Hello Shark Readers!
This month's feature book is Hunger Games.
Many of the students have read this book for their classes like Mrs. Shiroma's or Mr. Orland and several other classes. The library aides are reading it this month along with Mr. John Payne's class.

There are many exciting things going on in the library. We have the audiobook in our collection but you will need to bring your e-reader, phone or flash drive in order to borrow the copy of the book. Please see Mrs. Napalan to borrow the audiobook of the Hunger Games. Make sure you have time spare because download time may vary depending on the speed of the Internet.

If you plan to join the field trip to watch the Hunger Games, please see Mrs. Napalan. You do not need to read the book to join the fun but you will need to fill-out the pre-test and post-test to be a participant. Please check Mrs. Napalan to register and for passwords for the test.

We will be also posting daily questions for discussions. Please feel free to join.
Let the Games begin!
